2009 Singles Nationals

The National Butterfly Association (“NBA”) is looking for a host for the 2009 Singles. As the new fleet captain, I can’t help but want to shout out “PICK US, PICK US!” Our club first hosted this event in 1973 and last hosted it in 1991 and I think it’s time to do it again.

I’m a relative newbie to the fleet and the lake and both have totally floored me and I feel rather honored to be sailing in this fleet and at this lake. Hopefully, if the NBA checks out our website, they will have the same reaction.

So, to get everyone thinking “can do” and White Rock Lake for the 2009 Singles Nationals, I’ve attached some vintage video, pictures and my top ten “why us” list for consideration:

1. The sun is always shining, the water is warm and Texans are very welcoming hosts.
2. If you can sail well on White Rock Lake, you can sail well anywhere … come see if it’s true.
3. Our fleet is (probably) the oldest Butterfly fleet in existence and still going strong.
4. White Rock Boat Club’s newly rebuilt 2008 clubhouse needs to be appropriately initiated with a National Championship (please don’t leave us hanging) …
5. The old salts in our fleet are super cool and hard to beat and the newbies have more energy than they have sense and are fun to watch capsize.
6. Check out the ‘73 video clip and the rebuilding of the clubhouse for the nationals … our Butterflyers are hard core.
7. Check out the ‘73 winner’s video clip, the junior champion, Scott Young, won his sixth Mallory this year … no doubt due to all that early Butterfly experience.
8. Paul Foerster’s past Butterfly experience in our fleet was, quite obviously, the stepping stone to his numerous Olympic medals, not to mention his world and national championships in multiple classes.
9. Our fleet sails every Saturday all year round and has done so since the 60s.
10. Real Men (and Women) sail Butterflys at White Rock Lake!!
