What an adventure it was being on the lake this weekend. No matter what you were doing it was wild. I mean, really wild.
On Saturday morning, it was blowing pretty good, but we had 8 boats on the line, in spite of the wind. In the 2nd race, we had nine boats. The skippers were Dave, Bruce, Sandy, Frank, Burton, Miles, Jim and Tom. We also had a guest in a fleet boat. His name is Mike and is a friend of Shaun's. He belongs to CSC, has a Flying Scot and has several years of sailing experience. Handling a Butterfly for the first time in the high winds was a challenge for him, but he said he had a good time. We hope that he comes back and races with us again. Gary and Lynn had race duty, and I am sure it was pretty bumpy in the committee boat as well. They took a reading from the committee boat and figured it was blowing 20-25 as the day went on. At CSC, they clocked some gusts at 30.
Bruce won the first race with Frank 2nd and Sandy 3rd. In the second race, Bruce won again with Burton 2nd and Sandy 3rd.
There were only 5 skippers that were crazy enough to go out in the 3rd race. By then it had built even more. It was a real beating. Although the wind had some shifts, it was not squirrelly, or knockdown wind. There was just a lot of it. You have all heard of screaming reaches? These were screamers. What a blast they were. What a ride. Some of us were even planing on a run. That was a thrill. One that most have never experienced before.
No one went over, but Jim had a stay give way and lost his mast. He had to be towed in. Sandy won the 3rd race, with Burton 2nd and Bruce 3rd. After everyone finished and Jim was being towed in, Tom was still out there by himself trying to get to the finish line and then back to the dock. We all came in pretty wet.
They also had a Snipe Regatta this weekend. Catherine and Amber crewed in that. They not only were fighting the wind on Saturday, but on Sunday as well. Amber crewed for a guy from Alabama, and they came in 4th in the regatta. She said that she was so beat up and bruised that she will have to wear slacks to work for a couple weeks. Catherine and Gene finished 2nd in the regatta. She said that she had a few black and blue marks, but not as bad as Amber. They both said that it was a wild time, but a lot of fun.
In the Sunday program, Frank and Bruce raced in Frank's Flying Scot, and Burton raced his. They all had wind problems, as well. Burton went over in his Scot, and they had a lot of trouble getting it uprighted.
So, the Butterfly Fleet was very active this weekend.
Bruce has put his Butterfly up for sale. If anyone is interested, give him a call.
The fleet boats are back in order, so you can invite people to race with us. Thanks to all who donated equipment to the cause. It saved the fleet a considerable amount.
