The locals suggest coming out a few days early, the mountains should be at high color as the aspens turn yellow and the willow brush turns red. Its also the beginning of the elk 'bugling' season, when the herds start to move to lower altitudes and the males get vocal about defending their harems. All of that can be enjoyed on the hour-drive west from Union Reservoir into Rocky Mountain National Park. And check out Colorado's free hats for those driving into the state on one of the interstates. The NOR for the event should be up here early on the week of Aug 23, it was buried in a computer that died at Spring Lake during the Westerns!
