STARTING RULES

Recent discussions about when the rules apply at the start inspired Gary to make his notes public. I believe the upshot is the 5 minute warning signal is to warn that racing is about to commence and the Racing Rules will apply in 1 minute.
Then a recent experience of Cameron and Cathy sent Cathy in search of more information about rules at the start and she came up with a very enlightening link. Be sure to scroll down to the "BEFORE THE START" section. I learned something new.
BEFORE THE START:
After spending some time studying rules-related matters to prepare for this article, it comes as somewhat of a shock to me that I - and I suspect, most of the rest of us - could have been DSQ'd in numerous races since the new rules came into effect in '97. Just have a look at this hypothetical example:
