4-7-12 RACING

by Brad

The weather on Saturday could not be described any different than PERFECT… with winds out of the south at 8-10mph for the first two races and increasing up to 15-18mph for the third we enjoyed a sunny mid 70 degree day at the lake.

The first race had 8 butterflies and a sunfish on the line with Sandy taking first, Lynn finishing just in front of Frank for second and third.  The second race had a very crowded start with 9 butterflies and about 4 boats inches from being called back.  Everyone was good to go, however Gary took it upon himself to go over early and circle back around and start on a port tack and head to the west shore.  This should also be known as Gary’s side of the lake…  With at least a 30 second disadvantage Gary sailed on this side of the course on his own and picked up the wind he was looking for.  Soon he was a good 30-45 second ahead of everyone.  Gary held place and finished first, Sandy in second and Frank in third.

The winds picked up after lunch and the third race was a bit faster.  Bowman needed some help after her tiller extension broke which made a jibe close to the dock difficult and capsized her boat.  Everything was ok, and we assisted her back to the dock and raced back to the finish line.  Sandy came over in front, with Frank in second and Gary in third.

Cameron sailed a fleet boat and did well keeping up with the fleet.  It was great to have Lynn out for a few races before he had to get back to work.  He makes it look so easy finishing in the top 4 each race without sailing in about a year.  Cathy and Bowmen are shaping up to make a run at the woman’s national champion award this June.  One of our newest member’s Kurk was out and sailed well in all races.

Hope everyone had a great Easter weekend.
