7/10/10 RACING

While standing on the dock, we all wondered whether there would be any wind. After getting to the starting line, we discovered that there was not. We had 10 boats on the line just waiting. During the first race, however, the wind came up and it turned out to be a fairly nice day for racing.
Among the 10 skippers were Bruce, Sandy, Dave, Frank, Burton, Shaun, Miles and Tom. Bob and Brad had the duty.
The first race was a windward 1 1/2. On the first leg, it seemed that no one would get there. There were boats everywhere, and none seemed to be heading for the mark. After the first mark the wind came up a little and we all started to move. Bruce figured it all out and won that race with Sandy second and Shaun third.
The second race the wind was better, but it was a little tricky. You know the kind. Now you have it, now you don't. It was hard to hold a tack for very long. Frank won that race with Bruce second and Sandy third.
The 3rd race was exciting. We had 5 boats that were all together all of the way. There was a crowd at every mark, and they all finished about the same time. What fun. Bruce won, with Sandy second and Burton 3rd.
Marlisa and Kiki were also among the 10 racers. These two ladies were in the Chris/Megan club sailing classes. Although they have had some lessons, they are still pretty new to sailing, and this is the first time that they have ever raced. They did very well. In fact, in the first race Kiki came in 6th. Not bad for the first time in a Butterfly. She attributed it to beginners luck, but I assured her it was skill. Marlisa is Jackie's daughter in-law. We hope these gals had a good time, and will come back and race with us again real soon.
Also on the dock were Catherine, Jackie and Megan. Catherine has been nursing a bum knee. She did not race with us, but took her boat out for a sail.
Last week Frank and Bruce went to New Orleans and competed in the Flying Scot North Americans. The were there for a week, but with bad weather, they only got in 3 races. They did well, coming in 6th in the Challenger Division. Congratulations to them.
At the last reading, both Sandy and Shaun have boats for sale.
