2011 WRANGLE REGATTA

by Cathy

How do you define the Wrangle Regatta?  Two gorgeous fun-filled days with a lot of pleasant sailing!  I have never had more fun or been around a more delightful group of people.  The food and company were excellent.  And the wind!  Finally, the wind was almost perfect.  It might have been a little light for some, but most agreed that the conditions were pretty ideal and sailors who like heavier air admitted that the lighter air practice was good too.

On Saturday, the wind ranged from around 8-12 mph.  After lunch, the wind was higher and puffier with some gusts up to 16 and 17.  With all the wonderful wind, races continued until 3 pm or so.  We raced while the racing was good.  Four races in one day is a lot.  Is this an endurance event?  It would seem so.

Sunday graced us with light air around 8-12 mph with some puffs in the 14-16 mph range.  Just one race and then on to the awards presentation.

I was pretty pleased to make it around the course four out of five times and I was not last.  Pretty good.  Just goes to show that joining the Butterflys will improve your sailing skills faster than any other method.

Frank placed 1st overall, coming in 1st in 4 out of 5 races.  Sandy placed 2nd even though he favors heavier air, he managed the light air pretty well.  Roland placed 3rd after not having sailed for many years.  Way to go, Roland!  Amber sailed like a dream and placed 1st of the women.  She beat a few of the guys too!

After having been quizzed by Frank about the favored end of the starting line, I searched and searched for it but it completely eluded me.  I think Steve Bell, PRO, set the course perfectly.  Great support from the RC all the way around.  And thanks to CSC for the use of the committee and rescue boats.

Thanks to Amber for the delicious food, Frank for drinks, Tom for taking care of trophies, Bruce for photos, Jackie for registration, and the entire fleet for a great weekend.

It was great to see Pam and Doug, who offered their financial support and got us off to a great start just by being there on Saturday before serious racing started.

And last but not least, special thanks to Brad for organizing a great regatta, along with a raffle for hiking straps donated by Windward Boatworks, the Butterfly manufacturer.  This is one event that I will not miss in the future.  And I look forward to more Saturday racing with this group so I will be more prepared next year.  Watch out!
