Two thumbs up for Rush Creek

by Pam
Paul, Doug and I all sailed Sunfish at DinghyFest this past weekend. It was windy, wet and wild. Doug was 2nd, Paul 4th, and I was 6th. There were 16 boats registered.

In years gone by, I've been at this event and waited up to an hour between races. But not this year. They have been making a concentrated effort at training race committee and it showed.

There were 4 fleets all on the same course. No rolling starts and the races started on time. Doug, doing his usual dawdling, made it to the start line of the first race with only 20 seconds to spare. As soon as a fleet finished they started them again. There were fleets starting on one side of the committee boat and at the same time fleets finishing on the other side. Not to mention that there were boats leaving the course randomly and boats tipping all over the place so it was a challenge to even keep track of everyone. And they did it in spades!

The MC Scows and Sunfish got in 6 races while the VX One's, buzzing past us left and right, got in 9 races. The Portsmith class with only two competitors, an 18 foot Aussie skiff and Paul Foerster with his kids on a JY only got in one race. The skiff never made it to the start line and they went ahead and started Paul F realizing that once the skiff went down on its way to the start line, that it wasn't racing. Paul F took the opportunity jump into the Sunfish fleet for a few races just to let us know who was king. Three races, three bullets.

Paul M, Doug and I all sailed every race even though it was quite windy. I actually had a 3rd in one race with neither Doug or Paul M even visible from the finish line. None of us tipped but Paul M did go swimming twice. I know I caused one of those when I did a crash tack and we collided and the other time I was right next to him but I'm not taking responsibility for that one. I think the hiking strap came undone.

It was a fun weekend. Going to different venues certainly stretches the experience level. I've never been in waves like that and I've never had a sustained gust hit during a run to where only the back half of the boat was touching the water. I had the main cleated most of the time going downwind and was two-handing the tiller feeling like I was somewhere between steering a gondola and riding a broom about the take flight repeating to my myself to stay under the sails.

At the end of the weekend, I was quite proud of myself for hanging in there for every race. Being a Balboa, I had the Rocky theme song playing in my head as I got back to the docks and felt like dancing around, fist pumping my hands in the air and singing 'Getting Stronger!" but in reality, I was only bent over with my hands on my knees and panting like a dog.

WURSTFEST REGATTA - Laser/Sunfish Final Circuit Stops

by Pam
Results

Wurstfest Regatta is an event everyone should experience at least once (or as often as possible).  Lake Canyon Yacht Club puts on two sensational Wurstfest regattas each year.  The first is for centerboard boats and the second is for keel boats.

This regatta is usually the last stop of many sailing circuits and this weekend wrapped up the Sunfish and Laser circuit season.

There were 86 boats in several fleets competing this weekend.  The Sunfish had the biggest fleet with the Flying Scots a close second.  The Lasers actually had a fleet this year which was welcome news for Doug.

Several White Rock sailors made the trip down to sail in various fleets.  Burton and Frank were sailing a Flying Scot and finished in the top 10.  Doug was sailing a Laser and took first.

First, second and fourth place went to former and current National Butterfly Champions, Paul, Doug and Ellen. This seems to be a trend. No doubt about it, former and present Butterflyers are just darn good sailors.

Doug bailed on Fly racing this weekend to do this circuit stop at WRBC and I took a "just me" weekend off. Doug called at the lunch break and was talking a mile a minute and was just plain jazzed. Paul Foerster had come out to sail and there simply is no substitute for world class, Olympic gold competition.

Doug was wearing his hat cam and caught some of the fun on video. Check out my YouTube Channel (Videos). I haven't had a chance to review and post everything yet since they had about 20 races and scored 19. CP Burks is a world class PRO with a motto of 'sail till they bleed.' According to Ellen, it isn't a good idea to ask him how many more races because he'll just start another one. What excellent practice.

Sunfish 2nd Circuit (RCYC) Results (5-15-11)

by Pam
DinghyFest always seems to be windy, cold, raining or some other version of miserable.   This year was no different.   I had only one goal for the weekend and that was to finish every race no matter how windy, cold, wet or miserable it got.

We started off windy, wet and wild.  It took about an hour to get the first race off.  I think I heard something about the committee boat being on fire at the docks.  Anyway, with about 10 seconds to the first start, I'd managed to get to the line right at the committee boat and was looking good.  Then Stewart Draheim slipped below me and Paul Foerster pulled in above me.  As Paul went by he looked over at me and had this expression of 'sorry but you're hosed' and I was.  The horn sounded and I sat there gassed and was the last person off the line.  I took Doug's coming from behind article to heart and looked at the angles and went hard right the opposite direction of the fleet.  Actually, I'm lying, I was freezing and I aimed my bow for the only part of the lake that had sun and then tacked to stay in it.  Coincidently, that happened to be the lifted angle to the mark.  I looked at the angles and thought, how could the entire fleet be sailing a headed tack and not know it.  Maybe I saw that wrong but I believe I arrived second at the first mark just behind Paul.  If I'm thinking of the right race, I held that position until the last half of the last leg and then worked my way backward to a 6th place finish.

Had it not been for the good finish in the first race, I'm certain I would have bailed on the second race because it truly is colder and windier at the back of the fleet.  At the front, it somehow feels much more tolerable.  It took another extremely long time to get the next race off and we were all freezing.  When we got in for lunch, not one person could actually hold their drink without shivering.  We bundled up good for the end of the day and the sailing conditions became more pleasant.  By the end of the day, I was in 5th place.  This was shaping up to be my best DinghyFest yet.

Sunday brought even more pleasant weather but in the last leg of the last race, I tacked straight into irons and watched 4 boats sail by me before I could get moving again.   By the end of the regatta, I'd worked my way to a 7th place in a 21 boat fleet.  Not half bad.  I usually do my best when I set my goals ridiculously low ... like just finish each race.  I think I'll continue to set low goals.  It seems to work for me.

Saturday Racing

By Pam
The Butterfly fleet races every Saturday all year round. First warning signal is at 10:30 a.m. (March through November) and at noon (December through February).

Check our website (top right corner) to see who has race duty and if there are any training drills scheduled for a given Saturday.

Lasers and Sunfish are welcome and we encourage them to join us on the line every Saturday. We use a 5 minute starting sequence and, depending on the number of boats, each fleet may get their own start.

Please note: The Butterfly fleet is always racing and keeping score. If you do not have enough racers in your fleet, you are still welcome to start with the Butterflys but we ask that you try not to interfere with the racers in a manner that will affect the outcome of their racing.

The Butterfly fleet has two fleet boats available for use so that you may join us on Saturdays. Please come by White Rock Boat Club to speak to someone about reserving a fleet boat.

Wurstfest Regatta Results 10/31/10

Results

This regatta was both the Sunfish and Laser final circuit stops for the year. The Sunfish had a fleet of 38 boats. Woohoo! Sadly, only a handful of Lasers registered for the regatta and they all decided to switch to the Sunfish leaving no Lasers to sail in the last circuit stop. However, this made for some good competition on the Fish course.

Stewart Draheim won the Sunfish circuit and J. Roy won the Laser circuit.

A handful of hardy Laser sailors are going to be sailing the Laser all winter long out at Fort Worth Boat Club on Saturdays at 2:00.

Sunfish/Laser 3rd Circuit (RCYC) Results (5/23/10)

Laser and Sunfish circuit stop at Rush Creek Yacht Club. It was mainly a Fish event with 31 Fish and only 7 Lasers. We had an abundance of windage and flippage. Doug often says he's a one trick pony (meaning a Laser) and I learned this weekend that when the wind kicks up, I'm a one race pony. Time to hit the gym. By Race 3 I hit a brick wall and Doug was kind enough to escort me back to the docks and then we sailed double-handed on the Fish for the rest of the regatta. Tacks and gybes were challenging and sloppy and we turtled and swam twice. Slow.

Those that stayed on the course simply amazed me at their strength, determination and talent. I felt like an observer in the middle of greatness with bunches of role models around me. That's not to say that I didn't also admire the sanity of those that stayed on shore or returned and chose not to abuse their bodies. I'm pretty sure I'll be grunting, groaning and saying ouch for the next week.
