Journal Entry for March 8, 2008

By Pam
Stats: Wind 0-12; Temps 30s-50s; Sunny

The morning started off on the chilly side. The rescue boat's drain plug was left lying in some water and was frozen into place and had to be chipped out before the boat could be lowered into the water.

We had 5 to 7 boats come out and that was without a few of our more diehard sailors on the line. Fortunately, there wasn't much wind while the temperatures were low and as the sun came out and the temperatures warmed up a bit, the wind increased as well. There were groans of agony at the end of the second race since the wind all but disappeared. A quick break for lunch was all it took for the winds to pick up and there were lots of smiles at the finish of the third race with some tight racing among Mike, Peter, Shaun and Tom. Sandy had a comfortable lead for two bullets in the first and third race but Mike got him in slow motion in the second race.

Tom gets the nice guy recognition after the fleet followed the leader for an Olympic course and Tom reminded them that it was a Triangle course before they all sailed too far out of the way. Megan gets the attagirl recognition for getting back out and sailing on a cold day after her 30-45 minute swim a couple of weeks ago when she capsized and the committee boat wouldn't start. Shaun gets the attaboy recognition for lulling Megan onto her boat and then shoving it away from the dock before she could change her mind, then experiencing a sail hoist malfunction that left him with less than a full hoist, which also put him at the start line 10 minutes behind the fleet, but he came back strong and caught up and got into the mix by the first mark. Impressive!

No sailing next weekend. WRBCers are working on their east dock and CSCers are working on their dinghy dock. Check with Bruce and Frank for details.
